McLeod team in driving seat for final

A team from McLeod Country Golf Club has qualified for the Holden Scramble championship final – the nation’s largest and most successful pro-amateur team event.

After qualifying at McLeod’s event earlier in the year, the team of four ladies from Ipswich held off at least 20 other teams to take out the regional final at Pelican Waters on Monday.

The team consisting of Judy Shelton, Cassandra Elsden, Trish Harris and Lyn Allan scored a gross of 61, 11 under par with a handicap of 6.8 to win the event.

McLeod Country Golf Club’s professional Richard Gompels accompanied the team on Monday and will play with them again in the championship final at Twin Waters on the Sunshine Coast from November 25 to 28.

“We are so excited to have made it to the championship final on the Sunshine Coast,” Gompels said.

“We just went out there to have a fun day and now we have qualified to the final stage which is unbelievable. Full credit to the ladies who played exceptionally well on the day.”

Team captain Judy Shelton was thrilled to make it to the championship final.

“Hopefully we can repeat our Pelican Waters win and bring the McLeod/Ipswich team home as winners,” she said.

By the time the annual competition is over, more than 45,000 golfers, both male and female, will have taken part in it.

The Holden Scramble championship final is the culmination of the event, with winning teams from each regional final progressing through to the championship.

The championship final is played under a 54-hole tournament format, with the teams of four amateurs and one professional competing.

McLeod celebrates Scotsman's Day

Members and Fellows of McLeod Country Golf Club paid tribute to the club’s Scottish heritage on Saturday (October 29) at Scotsman’s Day.

The annual event has been held each year for the past 37 years paying homage to the club’s rich history and proud tradition.

The day kicked off with a mixed competition, where the President was led to the first tee by a line of bagpipers.

The celebrations then included a Scottish lunch, bagpipers wearing kilts, dinner and entertainment by band Mood Swing.

McLeod Country Golf Club President Di Paez said a field of 180 players took part in the day’s festivities with a few of the original founders attending the celebrations.

“The Club had to obtain permission from the McLeod clan in Scotland to use their name and tartan, and it was this feat, together with the large number of Scottish members, which saw the start of Scotsman’s Day so many years ago,” she said.

“Scotsman’s Day is an annual event on the McLeod calendar and one the members and fellows really enjoy, dressing up and enjoying the festivities on offer.”

McLeod Country Golf Club sits on land purchased for $1 in 1968 and was founded by a group of women led by Kathleen Atherton and Hilda Reid who wanted to be able to play golf on a Saturday.

Today both women and men make up the 1000-plus membership enjoying strong camaraderie and fellowship as well as a challenging game of golf on the 18-hole course.

Teeing off for Breast Cancer Awareness

Mt Ommaney’s McLeod Country Golf Club is throwing its support behind Breast Cancer Awareness month this October holding two special fundraising days.

The club’s Pink Ribbon Day on October 5 attracted a field of 114 women who all wore pink. Participants on the day helped raise $2,500 for the Kim Walters Choices Foundation.

More than $900 was also raised at the club’s Pink and Pearls Day fundraiser on September 24 with the proceeds going to the Jane McGrath Foundation.

McLeod Country Golf Club president Di Paez said the two fundraising days were important events on the club’s golfing calendar.

“The fundraisers hold a special place in all our hearts at McLeod as many of us know of someone or have been close to someone who has lost a loved one to breast cancer,” she said.

“Every year we hold these fundraisers to help raise funds to provide support services to improve the quality of life for those affected by breast cancer, along with research into potential new treatments and prevention measures.”

Over 12,000 Australian women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year and tragically more than 2500 lose their lives to this terrible disease. One in nine women will be diagnosed with breast cancer by the age of 85.

McLeod Country Golf Club president Di Paez said the Senior Ladies enjoyed celebrating Seniors Week every year.

“A round of golf fits in with this year’s theme of having a positive attitude in life and keeping active,” she said.

“Seniors week is a great opportunity for the ladies to enjoy a little friendly competition and conversation while keeping active and doing what they enjoy.”

The Senior Ladies will take to the course on Monday, August 22 to celebrate.

McLeod Country Golf Club is located at Gertrude McLeod Crescent, Mt Ommaney.

Aspiring Golfer secures ultimate goal

Twenty-six-year-old Lexie Boyle has achieved one of her ultimate goals in life – securing the title of McLeod Country Golf Club’s 2011 Member’s Club Champion.

It took 37 holes of play for Lexie’s dream to become a reality, defeating fellow McLeod member Collette Byrne to lift the trophy.

The Carina resident has been anxiously trying to win the title but has had to settle for being a bridesmaid for the past six years.

“I am thrilled to have won the club championships. Throughout the past 13 years I have been piped at the post about six times so this win has been a long time coming,” the aspiring golfer said.

Lexie Boyle with McLeod Country Golf Club President Di Paez
“Winning the club championship was a goal of mine that I set when I was a junior. Even though it has taken me a little longer than expected to win it, I am proud I have achieved it.”

Lexie has been a member of McLeod Country Golf Club since joining as a junior and plays number one in the club’s Silver Pennant team.

“I have been swinging a club since I was four years old but I became serious about my golf when I was 13. In 1998 I was one of three girls to win a scholarship to play at McLeod,” she said.

“I feel I have become part of the McLeod family and the members and fellows have been very welcoming. There is a special camaraderie at the club that I enjoy.”

The aspiring golfer one day hopes to be able to solely concentrate on her golf career.

“At the moment I just like to play for fun but I am hoping one day I’ll be able to focus on my golf,” she said.

Sandra Andrews took out the title of McLeod Country Golf Club’s Division 2 2011 Club Champion defeating Carole Hall on the last hole. Mary Allen defeated Ruth Dalton to become the Division 3 champion for 2011.

Recently, 64-year-old Val Shine won the Senior Ladies Championships and has been a member of McLeod for 21 years.

Captains Corner

Captains Corner 10th August.

The Entry forms for our Anniversary Day Honour Board Single Stroke and Rae Livingston Shield Team Event for Saturday 17th September have been posted to other clubs and we hope to get a good response. This year it is a Shotgun start at 12 noon with morning tea commencing from 10.30am. The all inclusive price is $20.

The Rae Livingston Shield is a Team Event consisting of 4 players who must be from the same club (all four scores count). On the Entry form there is room for you to enter your name as an individual for the Stroke Event and all four names for the team Event. It is a Non seeded draw and those who nominate to play in a team are not allowed to play together.

The Best Nett score of the day is the Honour Board winner.

The Fellows will be having a shotgun start commencing at 7am (4 Ball Handicap vs Par), but they know they will have to be off the course no later than 11.45am. This is the first time we have tried this format and we hope with a little help from everyone that it will work and we will be able to maximise usage of the course.

It has been suggested to me that perhaps in Mixed events that the Members could hit off before the Fellows. If Members hit off and stand to the side it would speed up play, as in most cases the Fellows do have to wait longer before they can hit. So if this is the case could we please try this and see how much time we make up.

Another issue is players leaving their buggies at the front of the greens. There are a few exceptions but in general players should leave their buggies to the side and always exit the green from the side or back not the front.

The new work around the 2nd Green has a compulsory Drop Zone. If your ball goes into this area you MUST go to the drop zone.

The Holden Scramble on Friday 5th August was very successful. Unfortunately for McLeod Members the only visiting team that entered won the day. This is the second year that the Ladies from Ipswich have won the event.

On Sunday 21st August, Jan and Tom Fisher are again sponsoring . They have kindly donated a trip for two to Sydney with accommodation. Tickets are available from the staff at the bar and they are $5 each or 3 for $10 and will be drawn after golf on Sunday 21st August.

The Fellows Championships commence this weekend so I wish them all good golfing.

Captains Corner 3 August 2011

Captains Corner Wednesday 3rd August 2011.

Congratulations to our Club Champions for 2011.

It took 37 holes for Lexie Boyle to defeat Collette Byrne to become our 2011 Club Champion. Lexie has been a member of McLeod since joining as a Junior, and plays number one in our Silver Pennant team. She has been the bridesmaid 5 or 6 times in the championships so finally this was her year. Congratulations Lexie.

The Division 2 Champion for 2011 is Sandra Andrews who defeated Carole Hall on the last hole and Mary Allen defeated Ruth Dalton to become the Division 3 Champion for 2011.

Thank you to the Fellows who allowed the Members to play through in the morning field, it was very much appreciated. It was also lovely to see the club house full for presentations.

The Conditions of play for the Mixed Foursomes will be posted this weekend. It is a 36 hole competition on Sunday 28th August 2011. Special mention in these conditions are that motorised buggies are allowed , but that Gateway, Country, Limited and 5 day Members are ineligible to compete.

The timesheet will be available this Saturday. Play will be in 6’s.

Just a reminder for those Members that do move onto the next Tee block while the other players are putting out. Please hit off before you mark your card. If you go to the Tee and do not hit off it defeats the purpose of going over there.

Also a reminder to all players at McLeod (whether you play one, two or three times per week), in all games except a Stroke event if you cannot score on a hole you must pick up. Again on Saturday the afternoon field was over 25 minutes late hitting off which was disappointing when we had the Match play girls coming through with no where to go.

Please note there has been a change of play for Friday 12th August. This was originally reserved for Country Week but they are now playing on Friday 19th instead. We have therefore needed to change our competition back to the 12th. It is a 4BBB Stableford. The timesheet will come out on the Computer this Friday.

Good luck to the teams in the Holden Scramble this Friday.

McLeod Country Golf Club General Manager Michael Richards was thrilled with the attendance and the overall vibe of the day.

McLeod Golf Club warms up for annual Holden Scramble event

Teams of women golfers will tee off with one thing in mind at McLeod Country Golf Club on Friday, August 5 2011.

They will all be aiming to move one step closer to a possible start in the final of the Holden Scramble – Australia and New Zealand’s biggest amateur tournament.

It won’t be easy though as only two teams of four can qualify for their shot at glory and play in the regional final which will be played at Pelican Waters in Caloundra in October.

The winning team from the regional final will then swing into action in the national final at Twin Waters on the Sunshine Coast in November.

By the time the annual competition is over, more than 45,000 golfers, both male and female, will have taken part in it.

McLeod Country Golf Club professional Richard Harris said he was sure the competition was going to be as fierce as it always was.

“It’s such a popular competition which is open to ladies from all golf clubs. You don’t have to be a member of McLeod to participate in the competition,” he said.

“We had a terrific number of women playing in the event last year and this year is looking no different.”

Entry fee is $40 and includes lunch and a gift of six golf balls. Entry forms are available from the McLeod Country Golf Club office.

For more information phone the Pro Shop on 07 3376 3666.

McLeod receives flood recovery lift

McLeod Country Golf Club has been buoyed by a $50,000 grant from Golf Queensland to help assist with the club’s flood recovery.

The Mt Ommaney based golf club was heavily affected by the January floods with all 18-holes of the championship golf course under water and severely damaged.

The clubhouse was spared, but the devastating floods caused major damage to the fairways, greens, waterways, bunkers and the watering pumps.

McLeod Country Golf Club has also recently received grants from Queensland Sport and Recreation, QRAA and Brisbane City Council.

Club president Di Paez said she was delighted by the generous support shown by the peak bodies.

“History will show how the 2011 flood decimated the course, but it will also show the commitment demonstrated by the McLeod golfing community to get the course back into tip top shape,” she said.

“We are delighted to receive this assistance which ultimately will help restore the course back to its former glory.

“We have had a number of fundraising events and received some generous donations, however we are still looking for further donations to help us get back on our feet.”

Tee of at McLeod’s beginners clinic

Interested in broadening your horizons and trying something new? McLeod Country Golf Club is holding beginner’s and intermediate clinics this Saturday (July 23rd) from 8am.

The clinic will run over six weeks teaching beginners everything they need to know about the game of golf.

McLeod Country Golf Club’s head professional Richard Harris is hopeful the clinics will inspire keen golfers to consider taking up the sport permanently.

“Golf is a great sport because it offers valuable health benefits, improves hand-eye coordination, encourages interaction with others in a non-threatening environment and allows people to enjoy and appreciate the great outdoors,” he said.

“The clinics are an opportunity for beginners to learn new skills and be active in a safe and enjoyable environment. Many new careers start from humble beginnings.”

The beginner’s clinic runs from 8 to 9am and the intermediate clinic runs from 9 to 10am.

The six week clinic costs $95. For more information and bookings, please call the McLeod Country Golf Club’s Pro Shop on 07 3376 3922.

Captains Corner Wednesday 13 July

Wednesday’s Captains Corner

1. Time Slots There has been an issue with people pulling out of timeslots and moving somewhere else after a person has put their name down beside them. It is quite rude to pull out and leave that person on their own. If for some reason you have to do this please phone the person and let them know.

2. Slow Play On Saturday we found our first group of Members were more than one and half fairways behind the Fellows and 24 minutes behind them finishing. The second group were another fairway behind. These girls know who they are and need to remember that the afternoon field is really tired of hitting off late. The fellows went around in just over 4 hours ( due to having Marshalls out all morning). It just proved that it can be done. We played a 4 Ball alliance which really meant that not all girls should have finished every hole so we should have been quicker than normal not slower.

3. Time out Time in Please remember to put your time out and time in times on the back of your cards and please put an accurate time. Overall this helping everyone remember that we must keep up with the group in front of us and not worry about the ones behind.

4. Dropping When dropping the rule states that the ball must be dropped from shoulder height. It is amazing how low some ladies shoulders are !

5. Dropping from sand. When dropping from sand areas determine the nearest point of relief before dropping. Sometimes it may not be in the side you would like. Also sand filled divots do not count !

6. Championships The Championship draw has been done. Good Luck to everyone. The times have changed from the conditions of Championship Notice. We will now be hitting off at 1030 am on the first tee and 11.00 am off the 10th tee each day. Please check the computer for your tee time.

7. President V’s Captain This draw will be completed by 5pm on the 14th of July.

8. Average of Aggregate This competition is being played on the 27th of July (Divisional Draw) The paper sheet is on the counter in the office and the draw will be done next Thursday the 21st of July.

9. Holden Scramble Don’t forget to organize your team for the Holden Scramble.

laughter the best medicine

“The best way to cheer yourself up is to try and cheer somebody else up.” Mark Twain

Most people take life far too seriously. You and I are not going to get out of this life alive so why not enjoy the gift of life today as if it was your last. One day you will be right. In my book, The Road to Happiness is Full of Potholes, I stress that one of the key traits of truly happy people is their ability to have fun. Laughter is medicine for the soul. It helps you reduce the negative impact of the stressors in your life as well as see the problems you may be facing for what they really are, temporary teachers on the path of life.

Mrs Vallis and her grandson Sam Whiteman share the same passion and love for golf as each other, playing regularly at McLeod.

“Golf is the type of sport that you can enjoy with your grandchildren and pass on your skills to them,” Mrs Vallis said.

The ability to control your emotions and take full responsibility for your life and its opportunities and dramas is one of the key skills necessary for success, balance and happiness.  There may be times during life when it is appropriate to feel guilt, anger, resentment, fear, jealousy, disappointment, grief, insecure, blame and hundreds of other feelings due either to your belief system and values or the circumstances and people that life throws in your path.  Some people have the ability to experience these various emotions and then let them go quickly leaving no long-term negative residual effects.  Other’s, on the other hand seem to remain stuck in any one of these negative emotions, to their detriment, I might add. Emotional maturity is the ability to see life clearly.  To deal in - what is.  Not what can be or was or what you want it to be.

Emotional Baggage

"Don't keep it dump it and move on"
Was it something your parents did 20 years ago? Something a customer said last week? Or something a spouse or friend said yesterday? Old baggage is emotional stuff we carry around with us for days, months or even years. It is usually negative stuff like old hurts, resentments, anger or some kind of pain inflicted by another person or situation. It can also be just carrying around some old guilt, failure or fear that impacts our current relationships and life in general.

Why do people hold on to all of these old feelings? Everyone moves through life with their own very personal agendas, needs and life issues. Old baggage starts to feel very comfortable after a while, so comfortable as a matter of fact that many people die never able to let go of these hurts, slights and pain. There is one very good reason to let go of all of this stuff. One of the major causes of stress today is suppressed emotions that fester in the body taking their eventual toll on some aspect of our physiology. One of the biggest causes of stress today is all of this old emotional baggage. So why let it go? It may kill you if you don’t.

Thoughtfulness ... something to think about

 Thoughtfulness.

“When a person is down in the world, an ounce of help is better than a pound of preaching.” Edward Bulwer-Lytton
Have you ever noticed that some people are more generally thoughtful and appreciative than others? Why is it that some people:

-Say thank you regularly.

-Return phone calls on a timely basis.

-Acknowledge gifts and thoughtful acts in a positive and responsive way.

-Think more about how they can help others vs. themselves.

Over the years I have tended to notice this character trait in people, whether friends, family or total strangers. Are we just too: into ourselves, preoccupied, self-centered, busy, or do we downright just not care about others’ issues, feelings, dreams, concerns or challenges? Are our own personal agendas taking precedence over any thoughtful behavior? There are a number of considerations when it comes to this simple idea of being thoughtful and appreciative. Here are just two.

One: To be thoughtful of others because in some way you can bring sunlight into their lives regardless of their life dramas, position or status. Everyone needs some degree of acknowledgement, validation, appreciation, thoughtfulness or cheerleading. Can some kind act ease their burden or lighten their emotional load – even if only for a moment in time?

Two: The other is to show some recognition of the acts that other’s do for you whether solicited or not. Some people don’t show appreciation because they:

- Have no manners.
- Do not want to send the message to the other person that they approve of their behavior,
therefore sending the message, keep it up. They would prefer they stop. They don’t like
feeling guilty, obligated or uncomfortable.
-Don’t even notice the thoughtful acts of others.
-Expect thoughtful acts from others. They deserve them.

I could go on indefinitely with this information, but I am sure you know or have known people who you would define as less than thoughtful or appreciative. Maybe, even you fit into that category if you are willing to do a little honest self-appraisal. So what are our options when it comes to thoughtful attitudes:

1. Don’t attach strings to your thoughtfulness (expectations or barter)

2. Stop being thoughtful of others. (Let their behavior determine yours)

3. Be thoughtful only where it is appreciated, even if in small ways.

4. Start keeping score.

5. Be who you are and give and show thoughtfulness because that is who you are and it has
nothing to do with the receiver. Gifts given with love have no expectations or agendas
for a return of any kind.

6. Start giving anonymously. Send cards, notes of inspiration etc. to people and don’t
sign them.

And, if you are the lucky recipient of a thoughtful act from a friend or stranger take the time and energy to show appreciation - every time. Don’t break the chain. Even if the thought or act meant nothing to you or had no value for you, what is lost with a heartfelt thank you - I appreciate that!

Leading professional on hand for McLeod golf expo

Leading golfing professional Richard Harris’s love affair with the game of golf began when he first wrapped his hands around a 7-iron courtesy of a friend.

He was shocked by the power behind his swing but it wasn’t until his grandfather passed away and left him his club’s, that his passion for the sport intensified.

In 1989, Harris’s dreams of turning professional came true, playing on the Australian PGA tour for four years.

Harris is now increasing golfing opportunities in Queensland’s southeast corner as McLeod Country Golf Club’s head professional.

He provides top quality coaching to local golfers, elite golfers and club members who are looking to improve their social game.

“My focus on the game has changed. When you are playing on the tour you are so totally game orientated but when you’re coaching you are more person orientated and I love that,” Harris said.

“I love the club setting, the close friendships you make and the camaraderie. It’s different to life on the tour but it’s very rewarding for me.

Whilst working at McLeod Country Golf Club, Harris was named the 2009 Queensland PGA Club Professional of the Year and is the current Queensland Men’s State team coach.

Harris is also coach to leading golfing professionals Ben Pisani and Matt Gyautt.

Club president Di Paez said it was terrific to have someone of Harris’s caliber as a head professional at McLeod.

McLeod Country Golf Club is holding a free golfing expo on Sunday, June 19 from 9.30am to 2.30pm.

The expo is available to all aspiring golfers or golfing enthusiasts and Harris will be on hand to share his experiences.

The golf expo will include a putting clinic, driver demonstrations by PGA professionals, a short game clinic, fashion parade, nearest to the pin competition, demonstrations by leading golfing suppliers, lucky door prize, information kits and fun activities for the kids including a jumping castle and face painting.

Food and drinks will also be available for purchase on the day along with a sausage sizzle.

McLeod Country Golf Club was formed in 1968 for both men and women players and their families to enjoy.

For more information on the expo, phone the McLeod Country Golf Club on 3376 3666 or visit www.mcleodgolf.com.au

Customer Loyalty

This is an interesting read that might help your business encourage loyal customers, and there might be a message for McLeod as well!!!

ARE YOU LOYAL TO YOUR CUSTOMERS?

By Martin Grunstein

There is always talk among businesspeople about how price preoccupied and how disloyal customers are these days. Many businesspeople complain that some of their long term customers switch brands or providers when they are offered only a slightly better deal by their competitor. “Where is the customer’s loyalty?” they cry.

Guess what?

I think most businesses are LESS loyal to their customers than their customers are to them!

How often do you see companies offering a special deal to get new customers or win back old customers when very little has been done to nurture the relationship with the existing customers.

One of my workshop participants said “I used to be a loyal customer of XYZ retailer until they started having massive sales advertised in the newspaper. They are offering 30% off to people who have never done business with them before while I have been paying full price the whole time and have never received any recognition from them. They are not very loyal to me so why should I be loyal to them?”

It is very well known that if you approach your telecommunications provider and tell them you have been made an offer by their competition, they will match that price to keep your business. So who are the people on the worst deals? The people who never complain and just continue to do business with that telco. In other words, their truly loyal customers.

Years ago my wife used to subscribe to MARIE CLAIRE magazine and she always used to renew her subscription when she received the first notice from the publisher asking her to do so. One year she forgot to renew her subscription and she received a letter offering her a make up kit if she renewed. She didn’t respond to that offer and a couple of weeks later came an offer of a make up kit and a voucher to be spent at a well known retail store. We decided to see how much they would offer her if she was “disloyal” and didn’t renew until the last minute and she eventually received over $100 worth of goods to renew. Needless to say, in future years she waited till the last minute to renew and got all the goodies.

This is ridiculous but it is the norm in the industry. The less loyal you are, the more we will give you.

Can I propose an alternative that can save money and create loyalty instead of disloyalty? When the loyal customers renew at the first opportunity (which is what the publisher wants), how about sending them a card saying “thank you for renewing, we appreciate your loyalty” and throwing in a make up kit or some other token of appreciation. That way there is an incentive to be loyal rather than to be disloyal and basically, people will do what gets rewarded – works in parenting, works in business.

I say to my clients that instead of yelling at the people who don’t pay, why don’t you reduce bad debts by recognizing the people who do pay? Get your accounts receivable person to identify all the people who have paid their account on time every month and, at the end of the financial year, send out a card saying “I notice you paid your account on time every month this year. Thanks so much for that. You made my job so much easier. I hope you’ll accept this bottle of wine as my way of saying Happy New Financial Year”.

Next year when I have 12 bills to pay each month and I am only going to pay six of them on time, yours will be the first bill I’ll pay on time every month. It’s easy to not pay a computer, it’s hard not to pay a person, it’s almost impossible not to pay a person who thanked you for paying last time. $15 spent on wine could save you $15,000 of bad debts. It all depends where you place the focus.

The word loyalty is bandied about in business with great inaccuracy.

For example, many companies have “loyalty” programmes like FLY BUYS or Frequent Flyer programmes or “Get your 10th coffee free cards”. Please understand, these are NOT loyalty programmes, they are incentive or, more correctly, bribery programmes. If you spend $17000 on petrol, you can fly to Melbourne. Getting every 10th coffee free is effectively a 10% discount. How can you tell it’s not a loyalty programme? Because when you take away the programme, the customer often leaves too.

Let me tell you the very important difference between recognition and bribery. It is where it happens in the sales process. Recognition happens AFTER the sale and bribery happens BEFORE the sale.

Let me give you a couple of examples of recognition that are cheaper and more effective than bribery.

My financial planner rang me before Melbourne Cup day a few years ago and said he was having a FREE Melbourne Cup sweep for his best clients to thank them for their business. He told me what horse I drew and that there was a big hamper at the office that would be mine if my horse won.

I didn’t win….but I told about a dozen different people about my financial adviser and I think he picked up a client or two from my recommendation stimulated by the free Melbourne Cup sweep.

He could have run ten Melbourne Cup sweeps for 240 clients and generated ten times the goodwill. And perhaps he did. I don’t know and I don’t care. All I know is that I felt recognised and I was motivated to tell others about him.

One of my clients in the optometry has a friend who owns a book shop. Whenever he sells a pair of reading glasses for the first time, and the frames could be anything from $100 to $1000, he sends out a thank you card and a paperback novel he buys from his friend for $5. The card says “Thanks for buying your glasses from us. We really appreciate your business. I hope you’ll accept this book with my compliments and enjoy reading with your new glasses for the first time.”

The optometrist says he gest lots of word of mouth referrals from the $5 book and those people all pay full price for glasses when they do business with him. What is his competitor doing? BUY ONE, GET ONE FREE which has been decimating profits in the eyecare industry for over 20 years.

I am not saying that there is anything wrong with having an incentive for new customers to do business with you or for existing customers to do more business with you, just don’t call it a LOYALTY programme.

It is important to know that people are loyal to people, not companies or incentive programmes. If you want me to be loyal, remember my name, get to know me and ask me about what’s happening in my life when you see me, give me a call to see how my business is going or give me something that is not linked to me buying from you.

That’s what creates loyalty!

The day telcos or airlines or retail stores start spending more on recognition for their existing customers than they do on bribery for potential new customers, that’s the day we will see more customer loyalty in the marketplace, but not before.

McLeod Golf Club

To all Members and Fellows

On behalf of The Board thank you for putting up with the playing conditions at the moment. I know it has been difficult with the sewerage works on the 7th adding to the upheaval caused the by the fairway watering installations and the damage caused by the floods.

In addition to this we have been 1 staff member down for 3 months and another for the last month.

Please continue to bear with us as in the next week or so they will be starting the retro fit of the electrical wiring on the greens and fairways on the front nine. This should not be as evasive as the current works.

The Board realizes it is painful playing at the moment but he the irrigation upgrade is something we have been trying to do for seven years and when finished it will ensure we can provide a quality course year round. “ Short term pain for long term gain.”

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to call me

McLeod Golf Club " working with and understanding the people you work with"

One of the biggest challenges in relationships is the unconditional acceptance of another person’s beliefs, attitudes and behavior.  Having had a number of relationships with a variety of people: friends, employees, clients, children, supervisors, suppliers and audience members I can tell you from vast first hand experience that some people are easy to accept while others can bring us over the top of the emotional barometer when it comes to stress, anger and their ability to push our buttons.  What is unconditional acceptance?  I am not referring to what John Powell discusses in his great book, Unconditional Love.  It is simply the willingness and ability to understand that just because someone is different, has opposing views or has behavior we disapprove of - to realize that they are not right or wrong.  They are just being who they are as a result of their unique life.

McLeod green thumbs celebrate special day

McLeod Country Golf Club’s gardening ladies marked the centenary celebration of International Women’s Day on Tuesday, March 8 by helping to restore the club’s gardens to their former glory.

The Mt Ommaney club’s beautiful gardens were affected during the January floods.

Club president Di Paez said the gardening ladies regularly meet on Tuesdays to help look after the attractive gardens of the golf club.

“The ladies are responsible for planting, pruning and maintaining the gardens around the tees and throughout the course,” she said.

“The ladies are very passionate about the gardens and take time away from playing a round of golf to help.

“It was great to see them get back into gardening to help celebrate such a special occasion for women.”

International Women’s Day is a global celebration of the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future.

The first International Women’s Day was celebrated on March 19, 1911 in Germany following a declaration by the Socialist Party of America. 100 years on, the day has become a global mainstream event celebrated across several countries.

McLeod Country Golf Club was formed in 1968 for both men and women players and their families to enjoy.

McLeod Golf Club on course to rebuild

The floods haven’t washed away the determination to succeed at Mt Ommaney’s McLeod Country Golf Club.

Members, fellows and staff members have all volunteered to help get the championship course back up and running with all 18 holes now in play.

General Manager Michael Richards said it was only when the 13-metre high water subsided that the full extent of the damage could be assessed.

“All 18 holes were damaged by water and mud. I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was like looking out at a lake,” Mr Richards said.

“The clubhouse was spared but there was major damage to the fairways, greens and waterways.

View from the third tee during the January 2011 floods
“We will have to replace the sand, matting and drainage to the bunkers on the course at a cost of approximately $3000 per bunker and the flags, cups and seats were all washed away.

“We will also have to replace the pumps that water the course.

“The overall damage bill will take some time to quantify but we have had a number of fundraising events and received some generous donations, however we are still looking for further donations to help us get back on our feet.”

Club president Di Paez said she was delighted by the generous help shown by the McLeod golfing community.

“History will show how the 2011 flood decimated the course, but it will also show the commitment demonstrated by the McLeod golfing community to get the course back into tip top shape,” she said.

McLeod Country Golf Club was formed in 1968 for both men and women players and their families to enjoy. McLeod Country Golf Club is the only golf club in the Southern hemisphere administered by women and is one of the few such clubs in the world.
