Round of golf to celebrate Seniors Week

Growing old has never been so much fun for members of Mt Ommaney’s McLeod Country Golf Club.

This year the Senior Ladies will celebrate Seniors Week with a round of golf with their friends enjoying the camaraderie and friendship the club has to offer.

Seniors Week is being held from August 20 to 28 and encourages Queenslanders of all ages and backgrounds to celebrate the positive contributions of seniors.

This year’s Seniors Week theme is ‘Positively Ageless’ to reinforce the benefits of a positive attitude to life.

McLeod Country Golf Club president Di Paez said the Senior Ladies enjoyed celebrating Seniors Week every year.

“A round of golf fits in with this year’s theme of having a positive attitude in life and keeping active,” she said.

“Seniors week is a great opportunity for the ladies to enjoy a little friendly competition and conversation while keeping active and doing what they enjoy.”

The Senior Ladies will take to the course on Monday, August 22 to celebrate.

McLeod Country Golf Club is located at Gertrude McLeod Crescent, Mt Ommaney.

For more information on the club visit www.mcleodgolf.com.au or phone 3376 3666.

Aspiring Golfer secures ultimate goal

Twenty-six-year-old Lexie Boyle has achieved one of her ultimate goals in life – securing the title of McLeod Country Golf Club’s 2011 Member’s Club Champion.

It took 37 holes of play for Lexie’s dream to become a reality, defeating fellow McLeod member Collette Byrne to lift the trophy.

The Carina resident has been anxiously trying to win the title but has had to settle for being a bridesmaid for the past six years.

“I am thrilled to have won the club championships. Throughout the past 13 years I have been piped at the post about six times so this win has been a long time coming,” the aspiring golfer said.

Lexie Boyle with McLeod Country Golf Club President Di Paez
“Winning the club championship was a goal of mine that I set when I was a junior. Even though it has taken me a little longer than expected to win it, I am proud I have achieved it.”

Lexie has been a member of McLeod Country Golf Club since joining as a junior and plays number one in the club’s Silver Pennant team.

“I have been swinging a club since I was four years old but I became serious about my golf when I was 13. In 1998 I was one of three girls to win a scholarship to play at McLeod,” she said.

“I feel I have become part of the McLeod family and the members and fellows have been very welcoming. There is a special camaraderie at the club that I enjoy.”

The aspiring golfer one day hopes to be able to solely concentrate on her golf career.

“At the moment I just like to play for fun but I am hoping one day I’ll be able to focus on my golf,” she said.

Sandra Andrews took out the title of McLeod Country Golf Club’s Division 2 2011 Club Champion defeating Carole Hall on the last hole. Mary Allen defeated Ruth Dalton to become the Division 3 champion for 2011.

Recently, 64-year-old Val Shine won the Senior Ladies Championships and has been a member of McLeod for 21 years.

Captains Corner

Captains Corner 10th August.

The Entry forms for our Anniversary Day Honour Board Single Stroke and Rae Livingston Shield Team Event for Saturday 17th September have been posted to other clubs and we hope to get a good response. This year it is a Shotgun start at 12 noon with morning tea commencing from 10.30am. The all inclusive price is $20.

The Rae Livingston Shield is a Team Event consisting of 4 players who must be from the same club (all four scores count). On the Entry form there is room for you to enter your name as an individual for the Stroke Event and all four names for the team Event. It is a Non seeded draw and those who nominate to play in a team are not allowed to play together.

The Best Nett score of the day is the Honour Board winner.

The Fellows will be having a shotgun start commencing at 7am (4 Ball Handicap vs Par), but they know they will have to be off the course no later than 11.45am. This is the first time we have tried this format and we hope with a little help from everyone that it will work and we will be able to maximise usage of the course.

It has been suggested to me that perhaps in Mixed events that the Members could hit off before the Fellows. If Members hit off and stand to the side it would speed up play, as in most cases the Fellows do have to wait longer before they can hit. So if this is the case could we please try this and see how much time we make up.

Another issue is players leaving their buggies at the front of the greens. There are a few exceptions but in general players should leave their buggies to the side and always exit the green from the side or back not the front.

The new work around the 2nd Green has a compulsory Drop Zone. If your ball goes into this area you MUST go to the drop zone.

The Holden Scramble on Friday 5th August was very successful. Unfortunately for McLeod Members the only visiting team that entered won the day. This is the second year that the Ladies from Ipswich have won the event.

On Sunday 21st August, Jan and Tom Fisher are again sponsoring . They have kindly donated a trip for two to Sydney with accommodation. Tickets are available from the staff at the bar and they are $5 each or 3 for $10 and will be drawn after golf on Sunday 21st August.

The Fellows Championships commence this weekend so I wish them all good golfing.

Captains Corner 3 August 2011

Captains Corner Wednesday 3rd August 2011.

Congratulations to our Club Champions for 2011.

It took 37 holes for Lexie Boyle to defeat Collette Byrne to become our 2011 Club Champion. Lexie has been a member of McLeod since joining as a Junior, and plays number one in our Silver Pennant team. She has been the bridesmaid 5 or 6 times in the championships so finally this was her year. Congratulations Lexie.

The Division 2 Champion for 2011 is Sandra Andrews who defeated Carole Hall on the last hole and Mary Allen defeated Ruth Dalton to become the Division 3 Champion for 2011.

Thank you to the Fellows who allowed the Members to play through in the morning field, it was very much appreciated. It was also lovely to see the club house full for presentations.

The Conditions of play for the Mixed Foursomes will be posted this weekend. It is a 36 hole competition on Sunday 28th August 2011. Special mention in these conditions are that motorised buggies are allowed , but that Gateway, Country, Limited and 5 day Members are ineligible to compete.

The timesheet will be available this Saturday. Play will be in 6’s.

Just a reminder for those Members that do move onto the next Tee block while the other players are putting out. Please hit off before you mark your card. If you go to the Tee and do not hit off it defeats the purpose of going over there.

Also a reminder to all players at McLeod (whether you play one, two or three times per week), in all games except a Stroke event if you cannot score on a hole you must pick up. Again on Saturday the afternoon field was over 25 minutes late hitting off which was disappointing when we had the Match play girls coming through with no where to go.

Please note there has been a change of play for Friday 12th August. This was originally reserved for Country Week but they are now playing on Friday 19th instead. We have therefore needed to change our competition back to the 12th. It is a 4BBB Stableford. The timesheet will come out on the Computer this Friday.

Good luck to the teams in the Holden Scramble this Friday.
