McLeod celebrates Scotsman's Day

Members and Fellows of McLeod Country Golf Club paid tribute to the club’s Scottish heritage on Saturday (October 29) at Scotsman’s Day.

The annual event has been held each year for the past 37 years paying homage to the club’s rich history and proud tradition.

The day kicked off with a mixed competition, where the President was led to the first tee by a line of bagpipers.

The celebrations then included a Scottish lunch, bagpipers wearing kilts, dinner and entertainment by band Mood Swing.

McLeod Country Golf Club President Di Paez said a field of 180 players took part in the day’s festivities with a few of the original founders attending the celebrations.

“The Club had to obtain permission from the McLeod clan in Scotland to use their name and tartan, and it was this feat, together with the large number of Scottish members, which saw the start of Scotsman’s Day so many years ago,” she said.

“Scotsman’s Day is an annual event on the McLeod calendar and one the members and fellows really enjoy, dressing up and enjoying the festivities on offer.”

McLeod Country Golf Club sits on land purchased for $1 in 1968 and was founded by a group of women led by Kathleen Atherton and Hilda Reid who wanted to be able to play golf on a Saturday.

Today both women and men make up the 1000-plus membership enjoying strong camaraderie and fellowship as well as a challenging game of golf on the 18-hole course.

Teeing off for Breast Cancer Awareness

Mt Ommaney’s McLeod Country Golf Club is throwing its support behind Breast Cancer Awareness month this October holding two special fundraising days.

The club’s Pink Ribbon Day on October 5 attracted a field of 114 women who all wore pink. Participants on the day helped raise $2,500 for the Kim Walters Choices Foundation.

More than $900 was also raised at the club’s Pink and Pearls Day fundraiser on September 24 with the proceeds going to the Jane McGrath Foundation.

McLeod Country Golf Club president Di Paez said the two fundraising days were important events on the club’s golfing calendar.

“The fundraisers hold a special place in all our hearts at McLeod as many of us know of someone or have been close to someone who has lost a loved one to breast cancer,” she said.

 

“Every year we hold these fundraisers to help raise funds to provide support services to improve the quality of life for those affected by breast cancer, along with research into potential new treatments and prevention measures.”

Over 12,000 Australian women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year and tragically more than 2500 lose their lives to this terrible disease. One in nine women will be diagnosed with breast cancer by the age of 85.

McLeod’s Junior Golf Camp


McLeod Country Golf Club at Mt Ommaney is holding a Junior Golf Camp next week from September 26 to 29 from 9am to 12pm.

Juniors will be taught the fundamentals of the game including driving, putting, iron play, pitching, bunker play, character development, golfing etiquette and lots more.

The camp costs $120 and will run for 3 hours over the four days. Morning tea is provided each day and equipment is supplied.

Junior Sign on Day at McLeod

Or would you like to learn a game which not only offers you valuable health benefits, but improves your hand-eye coordination and allows you to appreciate the great outdoors.

Then McLeod Country Golf Club has what you’re looking for. The Mt Ommaney based club is holding a Junior Sign on Day on Thursday, September 29 from 12pm.

The sign on day will include a sausage sizzle and tour of the championship winning course and the club’s facilities.

Junior membership costs start from $95 and are open to children between the ages of 7 and 17 years old. Junior clinics and lessons are also available.

Apply for McLeod’s Junior Scholarship Program

Twelve lucky students aged between 8 and 13 years old have the chance to be selected for a free eight-week scholarship program run by McLeod Country Golf Club in conjunction with Brisbane District Golf Association (BDGA).

The program will start on Saturday, October 8 and will continue every Saturday morning from 9am until Saturday, November 26.

McLeod Country Golf Club’s head professional Richard Harris said the program was a terrific opportunity for juniors to learn the game of golf free of charge.

“Participants will be taught the fundamentals of the game including driving, putting, iron play, pitching, bunker play, character development, golfing etiquette and lots more.

“All equipment will be provided and all juniors are encouraged to apply no matter whether they have had lessons or are just starting out.”

Harris, who has just returned from a victory in Perth as the Queensland Men’s State Coach said golf was a great alternative for kids who want to try something different to the usual popular sporting offerings such as Netball, Swimming and Rugby.
