Australian Women’s Interstate Teams Matches for the Gladys Hay Cup, McLeod Country Golf Club


Joint winners: Queensland & Victoria

For the first time in the championship’s history, Queensland and Victoria are the joint winners of the Australian Women’s Interstate Teams Matches for the Gladys Hay Memorial Cup at McLeod Country Golf Club.

Queensland last won the title in 2007 in Victoria while the Victorians broke a 14 year drought since they last won in South Australia.

Breanna Elliott (Victoria) and Ashley Ona (Queensland) were undefeated in singles to help both states to the top of the leaderboard.

Western Australia finished in third place despite winning more matches than the winners. Contests are counted before matches.

Their 4-4 draw with Queensland brought Victoria into the picture.

New South Wales, led by the undefeated Carly Beck, finished in fourth place following their commanding 7-1 win over Tasmania.

South Australia finished in fifth place while Tasmania finished in sixth.

Australian Women’s Interstate Teams Matches, McLeod Country Golf Club

Queensland and Western Australia will face off on Friday in a duel that will decide who lifts the Gladys Hay Memorial Cup at the 2010 Australian Women’s Interstate Teams Matches.

On the penultimate day at McLeod Country Golf Club, Queensland snatched a 4-4 draw with New South Wales to give them a half a contest lead over Western Australia on the leaderboard with the states to play each other on Friday.

Queensland began well through a 2-1 morning lead but New South Wales fought back as Elle Sandak, Chantal Hodson and Carly Beck won their singles matches in the afternoon. A hard fought 2&1 win for former Australian Girls’ Amateur champion Ashley Ona over former Srixon Australian Amateur champion Justine Lee levelled the contest.

Victoria moved into third place following their 5-3 win over Western Australia – ending WA’s consecutive 8-0 results.

Leading 2-1 from the foursomes, Stacey Keating, Breanna Elliott and Elissa Orr won their matches to complete the win for Victoria.

New South Wales is in fourth place following their halved contest with Queensland.

South Australia recovered from their 7-1 loss to New South Wales on Wednesday to defeat Tasmania by the same scoreline on Thursday and hold fifth place. Tasmania are in sixth place.

Western Australia produced a second consecutive 8-0 demolition to move into top spot at the Australian Women’s Interstate Teams Matches for the Gladys Hay Cup.

The Western Australians defeated South Australia 8-0 on Tuesday before beating Tasmania by the same scoreline today at McLeod Country Golf Club.

Whitney Harvey had the best results of the day – winning her foursomes 7&6 with Jessica Speechley before winning her singles match 8&7.

Queensland kept pace with the leaders following their 6-2 victory over Victoria. Taking a 2-1 lead out of the morning, wins for Ashley Ona, Sheree Hasson and Ali Orchard gave Queensland the contest.

A gap of four matches and a contest has opened between Queensland and Victoria in third place following the Victorians’ loss.

New South Wales are in fourth place following their 7-1 defeat of South Australia. Elle Sandak, Carly Beck and Chantal Hodson recorded victories in both their foursomes and singles matches.

South Australia and Tasmania round out the leaderboard in fifth and sixth place with neither having won a contest.

Western Australia produced an outstanding overall display to defeat South Australia 8-0 and secure the narrowest of outright leads after the second round of play at the Australian Women’s Interstate Teams Matches for the Gladys Hay Memorial Cup in Brisbane.

Just half a match separates Western Australia, Queensland and Victoria.

Western Australia’s dominant win included comprehensive singles wins for Jayde Panos, Minjee Lee and Jessica Speechley in addition the 3-0 clean sweep of the morning foursomes.
Victoria and Queensland are tied in second place following strong wins over Tasmania and New South Wales.

Queensland won 6 ½ to 1 1/2 as Ali Orchard partnered with Corinne Swan to win their foursomes 8&6 before Orchard won her singles match 6&5.

The Queenslanders controlled the afternoon singles with solid wins as Tasmania’s Ashlee Dewhurst squared her match with Ashley Ona to remain undefeated.

Victoria remain firmly in contention following their 6-2 win over New South Wales. Victoria took all three matches from the foursomes before Stacey Keating, Breanna Elliott and Elissa Orr won to secure their win.

New South Wales sit in fourth place while Tasmania (5th) and South Australia (6th) complete the leaderboard.

Australian Interstate Series McLeod Golf Club 2010


Australian Women’s Interstate Teams Matches – McLeod Country Golf Club



Victoria leads the way after Round 1 of the 2010 Australian Women's Interstate Teams Matches for the Gladys Hay Memorial Cup at McLeod Country Golf Club.



The Victorian women recorded two crushing victories in the foursomes as Stacey Keating and Joanna Charlton defeated Tasmanians Narelle Hayes and Amanda Smith 10&8. Breanna Elliot and Julienne Soo won 7&6.



The wins set the mood for the rest of the contest and Victoria won four of the five afternoon singles matches to claim a 6-2 contest win.



Queensland trails Victoria by just half a match after a convincing 5 ½ to 2 ½ win over South Australia. Queensland took the lead going into the afternoon and Ashley Ona, Courtney Massey and Susan Glasby recorded singles wins to complete the victory.



Western Australia sits one match further back following an impressive victory over New South Wales. The Western Australians held the lead after the foursomes and continued to fight in the singles as Whitney Hillier – making a comeback from injury - won 7&6 to help seal the 4 ½ to 3 ½ victory.



Defending champion NSW are in fourth place while South Australia and Tasmania round out the early placings.
